Social media might not be beneficial for big companies, I read from http://bit.ly/hQco4d,[-x but for Small startups, I believe Facebook and twitter can really boost one's business!Applause

The thing people have to learn is that not all traffic is equal. You have to look at user intent, which is the biggest factor in monetising internet traffic. Facebook might have the numbers, but the intent of the users is communication. Monetising communication via ads is very hard. Imagine Safaricom saying calls are free but putting ads in between calls?

Just to add on what has already been said...
Rather than small businesses trying to focus on selling in social media, they should focus on creating a following & building relationships with the users on social media who could be prospects in future.

Social media does work but it takes quite a long time to start making money from it unless you are in a "social kind of business" like entertainment.

It is true, entertainment and media companies stands the most in gaining from social media.
Consultants in specialized fields like tax also stands to benefit, especially to foreigners who wants to invest locally
