But not to worry all yo middle class, someone will fill the gap that will be left once Nakumatt gets burried (maybe Chadarana or some international outfit). Local supermarkets will also gain from the spoils aka Tuskys, Naivas etc. So in short we need not cry over their mismgt.

Tuskys and Naivas are also donning empty shelves. The 24 hour outlets stopped and now close at 10.30am.

Only the Maguna Andus and other smaller supermarket will gain and survive this meltdown.Their size working for them.

Kamindi supermarket too will survive.

TZ sold, and they become minority.

They better prepare to become minority in Kenya too, no fool will buy 25% of your company and watch you keep fleecing it.

If I remember very well about 8 years ago Njiraiini boys went calling to nakumatt claiming they owed them taxes running into billions of kshs. The details of the plan that they struck out on paying are not known.
I think what we are witnessing now, like someone said, is an escape route to avoid KRA's door knocks for the hundreds if not billions of taxes that still remains unpaid.
I can guarantee you one thing for sure...that the money is being siphoned out of the country into offshore accounts. Some forensic audits needs to be done on nakumatts local bank accounts of the nakumatt owners and the company.
...besides, the presence of a safe alone does not signify that there is money inside...

Coca Cola hawataki ujinga!!! They have cut supplies to Uchumi!

Seems most retailers (Supermarkets) are having problems! What are the underlying issues. Someone needs to do a study of the retail market in Kenya. MBA students in the house, kazi kwenu. This might even be worth a PhD - if you can access the proper data that is.

I think it has more to do with governance and management challenges. Remember most of these started as small shops in Nakuru. Over time they have grown and founder owners died. With succession in play, the incoming new owners might not have the patience to study implications of expansion and most importantly how to manage cashflows (not just calling in and taking cash for personal reasons but rather devising a dividend payment policy).

Methinks that also with them going blue label brand has held up their monies...so that by them saying they are well oiled, they are also counting the stock held as blue label while before, they did not hold any stock because suppliers owned everything while nakumatt would just sell. I would really like to see the paperwork that brought blue label into being.
So basically they followed the line of business that got uchumi on its knees, and they are now feeling the pinch left, right and center.
